Haunted Houses / New York 2012

Blackout Haunted House
Don't even think about bringing along a partner for this scary Halloween event, which requires you to go through solo with a protective mask and a flashlight. Fainthearted folk be warned: The descent into darkness promises "sexual and violent situations" and "physical contact." While speaking is not allowed inside the spooky scene, screaming is more than welcome. 54 W 39th St between Fifth and Sixth Aves (blackoutnyc.com). Mon, Wed, Thu 7--11pm; Fri 7pm--midnight; Sat 5pm--midnight; Sun 5--11pm. $30--$55. Through Oct 31.

Blood ManorMany of the characters and scenes in this eerie maze—including a Wolfman-esque creature and a serial killer in the vein of Hannibal Lecter—will seem familiar, while the Disgraceland Freakshow evokes a twisted sideshow act. You're propelled though a number of gruesome scenarios, from a blood-soaked abattoir adorned with hanging pig carcasses to a pitch-black graveyard. 163 Varick St at Charlton St (bloodmanor.com). Times vary; $28.50--$50. Through Nov 5.

Creepshow at the Freakshow
As you creep through the haunted house, you'll see amusement-park crime scenes, which include a collapsed roller coaster, decapitated bodies and plenty of zombies. Then participate in the ghoulish trial of the negligent ride inspector. Coney Island Sideshow, 1208 Surf Ave at 12th St, Coney Island, Brooklyn (718-372-5159, coneyisland.com). Oct 14--16, 21--23, 26--31 6--11pm; $10.

Gravesend Inn
This "haunted hotel" in Downtown Brooklyn is not only truly terrifying, but also has an educational element. Every year, students in City Tech's Theatreworks program produce the attraction from the ground up, with skeleton pirates, talking paintings and a grisly, bloody bathroom. 186 Jay St between High and Nassau Sts, Downtown Brooklyn (718-260-5592, gravesendinn.org). Oct 20, 27, 31 1--5pm; Oct 21, 22, 28, 29 1--5pm, 6--9pm. $6, students with ID $4. Through Oct 31.

Nightmare: Fairy Tales
Wolves eating children. Bears eating children. Witches eating children. We're sensing a dark pattern in many of the beloved yarns that kids have grown up with for centuries. Creator Tim Haskell and his team have harnessed some of this tykes-as-snacks energy for the annual installment of this popular haunted house. Actors and theatrical set pieces are sure to remind you of the terror of childhood stories. Clemente Soto Vlez Cultural and Educational Center, 107 Suffolk St between Delancey and Rivington Sts (212-352-3101, hauntedhousenyc.com). Times vary; $30--$100. Through Nov 5.

Nightmare: Z-Day
This Halloween, the zombie apocalypse starts again in the Bronx. Head to this Pelham Bay safe house, with its suspect fortifications under siege from the flesh-eating undead. Horror-film antics are likely to ensue. The VIP ticket allows you to jump to the front of the line. 1157 Commerce Ave at Gleason Ave, Bronx (718-866-8457, nightmarebronx.com). Oct 14--16 7--10pm; Oct 21, 22 7--11pm; Oct 23 7--10pm; Oct 27--31 7pm--midnight. $15, students $10, VIP $30. Through Oct 31.

Steampunk Haunted House
What's scarier than a regular haunted house? A mazelike haunted house that's been taken over by demented robots and spiders made of clockworks. Ew. You'll find all of that at this attraction, which combines steampunk culture with a traditional creepy house. It's science fiction meets Victoriana, with a dash of performance art from Third Rail Projects artists. Abrons Arts Center, 466 Grand St at Pitt St (212-598-0400, steampunkhauntedhouse.com). Oct 22 8--11:15pm; Oct 23 6--9:15pm; Oct 26 6--8:45pm; Oct 27 6--9:15pm; Oct 28 8--11:15pm; Oct 29 8--11:15pm; Oct 30 6--9:15pm; Oct 31 6--9:15pm. $10--$50. Through Oct 31.
