NASA and Google team up to buy into quantumish computing

A consortium of researchers from Google and NASA are planning to crack the issue of machine learning with a $15m quantum computer that will form the basis of a new Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab.
The new facility, which will be sited at Silicon Valley's NASA Ames Research Center, will host a 10 square meter shielded room which will contain a D-Wave quantum processing machine – a superconducting 512-qubit processor chip cooled to 20 millikelvin which will be upgraded to 2,048 qubits once the hardware becomes available.

Quantum computing may help solve some of the most challenging computer science problems, particularly in machine learning," said Hartmut Neven, Google's director of engineering, in a blog post.
"Machine learning is all about building better models of the world to make more accurate predictions. And if we want to build a more useful search engine, we need to better understand spoken questions and what's on the web so you get the best answer."
As El Reg has pointed out, the D-Wave machine isn't, strictly speaking, a quantum computer of the type that could be used to crack the world's encryption systems. Rather it uses quantum effects to massively speed up the processing and optimization of data.
Neven said that Google has already tried some machine-learning problems out on the machine and has developed a compact, low-power recognizer for mobile phones and sorting through some highly polluted datasets.
Meanwhile, NASA wants to use the system to examine data from the potentially doomed Kepler telescope to find exoplanets across the universe. In addition, 20 per cent of the system's runtime will go to the Universities Space Research Association for other tasks.
"The order for a D-Wave Two system for the initiative launched by NASA, Google and USRA attests to the revolutionary potential of this fundamentally different approach to computing for both industry and government," said Steve Conway, IDC research vice president for high-performance computing.
"HPC buyers and users are looking for ways to speed up their applications beyond what contemporary technologies can deliver," Conway said. "IDC believes organizations that depend on leading-edge technology would do well to begin exploring the possibilities for quantum computing.

Reservations Network Group **Scam** Clearwater Florida

The St. Petersburg Marriott Clearwater is having a seminar where a representative from Reservations Network Group , Representative Jeff,  will try and sell you there scam. Last week a sales rep from American travel partners  called me. They got my information from my entry in a drawing. Says I am entitled to a free vacation - and can choose from four different packages. The catch is that I have to attend a 90 minute seminar with info on this travel club in my city at Travel Partners USA. Once I attend this seminar, I get the information on the free vacation and have to choose which one I want within 21 days, and then I have 12 months to use it in.
American Travel Partners ,claimed to be able to get my wife and I vacations for about 70% off retail with an $8500 dollar upfront fee. Then you pay $200 a year for 10yrs. and you get all these great properties to travel to with $4000 to use each year for booking your vacayion. Each time you use part of your 4 grand for a vacation it is deducted from your total, say you spend a $1000 for a week in Europe it's deducted and your down to $3000 to use for the rest of the year no rollovers.
The URL http://www.rngrewards.com/
We declined after some high pressure and were given a $50 dollar gas voucher and a bunch of options for a (free) vacation?. I wish I'd gone online and read the reviews before I wasted 2hrs|. of my day off to listen to this scam:. They were operating out of a hotel, that should have been my 1st;.red flag'. Not to mention the free vacation's are not really free. below I have uploaded a scan paper that I was given to claim these vacations.

I can only hope none of the other people fell for this:. Because they'll never see their money again & won't ever get their (free)stuff;. They claim to be representing RSI but I read that's also a scam".
Don't go there! Run! I can't believe the State of Florida is not cracking down on these people.

HHgregg Warranty Sucks

After spending $3000.00 on all new appliances back in 2011, I am finding out that the warranty is worthless. So far, the drawers in my fridge broke and there is a small crack in my stove (Glass top). HHgregg warranty will not cover either issue. They said that it is a cosmetic problem not a function problem. My wife is supper pissed at HHgregg. Knowing that we spent around $500 for the warranty on all our appliances. So if you are making a large purchase or plan to buy appliances from HHgregg. "Buyer be ware." The warranty is a Joke. If you do have a warranty with HHgreg, there customer service is 1-877-456-9643 There automated system is horrible, it takes for ever to speak with anybody. Take my advice and Do Not Buy from HHgregg......Ass Holes... Dennis L. May is the CEO of hhgregg, What a joke. if you google HHgregg sucks. You will get over 5 pages of pissed off customers from hhgregg. Executives Dennis.May@hhgregg.com Jeremy.Aguilar@hhgregg.com Gregg.Throgmartin@hhgregg.com

7/1/13, Now my Whirlpool dishwasher broke.  It will not turn on. I called HHgregg warranty company. Filed a claim and they refereed me to a company called APSCO. Well I called APSCO in Largo FL. They were rude and refused to do any warranty work for HHgregg. I was pissed. APSCO review, Bad  and rude. Beware of APSCO Bad customer service. APSCO you suck....

The extended warranty finally paid off. My dishwasher was to expensive to repair, So, HHgregg gave me an in store credit for what I paid for it. However it has been 3 weeks and I still don't have a dishwasher.  When I went to get a new dishwasher I was stuck ordering a lower grade Frigidaire  dishwasher because that was the only machine within the price line of my in store credit.  Now I need to wait another week, because it was not in stock.  I am also out of pocket $100. to purchase a new 5 year warranty.

While I was looking for a new dishwasher. the sales person gave me some information that I was not aware of. HHgregg is so cheap because they buy manufactured re-furnished  products.  Then they claim to pass the savings onto the customer.I was not happy. That explains why my dishwasher only lasted 1 1/2 years.

www.apsco.com/Largo APSCO is a family owned appliances store located in Tampa Bay, FL. We offer the best in home appliances at discount prices. **Bull shit. They are Horrible**

Pinellas Park Police / Cops **Suck**

I freaken hate cops. Specially Pinellas Park cops.  I am no criminal, don't break the law, Veteren of the US Marine Corps, 2 college degrees, Great job and a loving family. But what pisses me of the most, is getting pulled over for no reason.  So far I got pulled over 2 times for stopping at a stop sign. Both cops said I didn't stop. Both situations, I saw the cop, I know I stopped. The cops stilled pulled me over. Both times I just got a warning.  Then last night really got under my skin.  I was on US19  / 34st Saint Petersburg /  Pinellas park, Heading North in the middle lane. The cop was right next to me in the right lane.  The car in front of me makes a right turn, cutting off the cop. The cop and I both slam on the breaks. I thought for sure the cop was going to pull him over. But nothing  happens. I pull behind the cop to make a right turn.  The cop yelds to the right, lets me pass, then pules behind me and puts on his lights. I thinking, "What the Hell." The cop pules me over, calls for back up. Walks up and tells me he pulled me over because my high beams were on.  "Really" I just saw a car almost cause an accidents and this ass hole pules me over for my HighBeam being on.  I  came home and ordered a dash came on ebay for $20. Cant wait to get it.  If your a cop reading this post, I respect cops. But hate "Ass Hole Cops",  next time you will find it all over Youtube....

5-year-old shoots 2-year-old sister in Kentucky with rifle he got as a gift

Dylan Lovan/Associated Press - A home in Cumberland County, Ky, is seen on May 1, 2013, where a 2-year-old girl was shot by her 5-year-old brother with a gun designed for children. Investigators say the Tuesday shooting was accidental. The children’s mother was home at the time of the shooting Tuesday afternoon but had stepped out to the front porch for a few minutes and “she heard the gun go off,” Cumberland County Coroner Gary White said. He said the rifle was kept in a corner and the family didn’t realize a bullet was left inside it.
BURKESVILLE, Ky. — In southern Kentucky, where children get their first guns even before they start first grade, Stephanie Sparks paid little attention as her 5-year-old son, Kristian, played with the rifle he was given last year. Then, as she stepped onto the front porch while cleaning the kitchen, “she heard the gun go off,” a coroner said.
In a horrific accident Tuesday that shocked a rural area far removed from the national debate over gun control, the boy had killed his 2-year-old sister, Caroline, with a single shot to the chest.
Down in Kentucky where we’re from, you know, guns are passed down from generation to generation,” Cumberland County Coroner Gary White said. “You start at a young age with guns for hunting and everything.”
What is more unusual than a child having a gun, he said, is “that a kid would get shot with it.”
In this case, the rifle was made by a company that sells guns specifically for children — “My first rifle” is the slogan — in colors ranging from plain brown to hot pink to orange to royal blue to multi-color swirls.
Kristian’s rifle was kept in a corner of the mobile home, and the family didn’t realize a bullet had been left in it.
“It’s a normal way of life, and it’s not just rural Kentucky, it’s rural America — hunting and shooting and sport fishing. It starts at an early age,” said Cumberland County Judge Executive John Phelps. “There’s probably not a household in this county that doesn’t have a gun.”
In Cumberland County, as elsewhere in Kentucky, local newspapers feature photos of children proudly displaying their kills, including turkey and deer.
Phelps, who is much like a mayor in these parts, said it had been four or five years since there had been a shooting death in the county, which lies along the Cumberland River near the Tennessee state line.
“The whole town is heartbroken,” Phelps said of Burkesville, a farming community of 1,800 about 90 miles northeast of Nashville, Tenn. “This was a total shock. This was totally unexpected.”
Phelps said he knew the family well. He said the father, Chris Sparks, works as a logger at a mill and also shoes horses.
The family lives in a gray mobile home on a long, winding road, surrounded by rolling hills and farmland that’s been in the family since the 1930s. Toys, including a small truck and a basketball goal, were on the front porch, but no one was home Wednesday.
There’s a house across the street, but the next closest neighbor lives over a hill.
Family friend Logan Wells said he received a frantic call telling him that the little girl was in an accident and to come quickly.
When he got to the hospital, Caroline was already dead. “She passed just when I got there,” Wells said.
White said the shooting had been ruled accidental, though a police spokesman said it was unclear whether any charges will be filed.
“I think it’s too early to say whether there will or won’t be,” Trooper Billy Gregory said.
White said the boy received the .22-caliber rifle as a gift, but it wasn’t clear who gave him the gun, which is known as a Crickett.
“It’s a little rifle for a kid. ... The little boy’s used to shooting the little gun,” White said.
The company that makes the rifle, Milton, Pa.-based Keystone Sporting Arms, has a “Kids Korner” on its website with pictures of young boys and girls at shooting ranges and on bird and deer hunts. It says the company produced 60,000 Crickett and Chipmunk rifles for kids in 2008. The smaller rifles are sold with a mount to use at a shooting range.
Keystone also makes guns for adults, but most of its products are geared toward children, including books and bright orange vests and hats.
“The goal of KSA is to instill gun safety in the minds of youth shooters and encourage them to gain the knowledge and respect that hunting and shooting activities require and deserve,” the website said.
No one at the company answered the phone Wednesday.
According to the website, company founders Bill McNeal and his son Steve McNeal decided to make guns for young shooters in the mid-1990s and opened Keystone in 1996 with just four employees, producing 4,000 rifles that year. It now employs about 70 people.
It also has a long list of testimonials from parents who talk about how grateful they are to be able to go shooting with their children.
Sharon Rengers, a longtime child advocate at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, said making and marketing weapons specifically for children was “mind-boggling.”
“It’s like, oh, my God,” she said, “we’re having a big national debate whether we want to check somebody’s background, but we’re going to offer a 4-year-old a gun and expect something good from that?”
